Paul,

> Pure Java is portable. Be portable. Be on the Web. Be everywhere.

...err, that would be Windows and Solaris (Linux?), right? With most (!) of
the market running Windows. Browser is either Netscape or Internet Explorer.
Somehow the dream of write once, run anywhere, has come down to earth with a
bump! The fact there is still no support on the horizon for the Mac. makes
the whole "philosophy" a joke.

I love Java's strengths, and I like Java 3D - but IMO statements like:
> If they say " Windows only ", walk away -- fast -- they are up to no good.

Ignore the commercial realities of developing software for a mainstream
audience. But I respect your opinion. :-)

On an unrelated note, and maybe someone could comment.

Why doesn't SUN have the balls to drop Java 3D support for DirectX? As a
developer I can imagine the mess the Java 3D codebase is in trying to
support these very different rendering APIs. Trying to keep OpenGL support
in-step with DirectX must be a nightmare and slow the advancement of the
whole API. SUN clearly coming out to bat for OpenGL on the Windows platform
would also strike a blow for better OpenGL drivers for video cards.

Is anyone on the list using the DirectX version of Java 3D? Perhaps I am
misreading the situation.

Sorry to rant to the list - feeling a little cantankerous this evening!

Sincerely,

Daniel Selman
