I will second that. I would put its priority right below the 1.3 features
of alpha sorting and 3d extensions (environment mapping, etc). If I thought
we could get pixel shader support anytime soon I would put that on the high
priority list too.

Subject: Re: [JAVA3D] Overlay example?
I just went back and did a search in the Java3D archives for "overlay" to
see what other people have discussed before. I'm shocked. As early as
1997, people have been posting on this list, trying to find an answer to
overlays in Java3D.
Some of the posts I found interesting were these:
http://archives.java.sun.com/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind9707&L=java3d-interest&P=R1054
from Kevin Rushforth (Sun) in 1997
http://archives.java.sun.com/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind9903&L=java3d-interest&P=R3959
Doug Twilleager (Sun) in 1999
Given that this subject seems to come up once a month, I think there's
sufficient interest in the community to make this feature a priority. And
if the functionality does exist currently, it isn't clear because no one
seems to know how to address this.
