John, good luck to Mike (he's going to need it). From what I've seen to
support Java 3D on WinNT your best/only shot is with OpenGL (and the PC
had better have a decent video card with good OpenGL support).
This really points to a more universal problem. The average user is
unable to update a video driver. In the case of NT, the OS partially
protects itself from this sort of activity (which can be even more
annoying to those who actually know what they are doing), whereas with
Win9x any user can freely install a new video driver (potentially
causing other things to break).
We live with a double edged sword. We can have the convenience and
reliablity of a Nintendo and live with the hard defined limitations or
we can have an open and powerful PC and live with all the
incompatibility issues. Hopefully the software and hardware vendors
will continue to make this less painful for the average person. But I
wouldn't hold my breath for it.
Microsoft *is* going in the right direction... just very, very slowly.
