Perhaps others on the interest list will have more suggestions.
The .obj format comes from a program called Advanced Visualizer from
Alias/Wavefront (www.aliaswavefront.com). It's a professional
grade application that won't suit most end users.
Many .obj files are available for free and for sale - try
www.3dlinks.com, www.viewpoint.com.
The .obj file format is a simple text file format, so it's
easy to generate them by hand, or write a small program to
do it. It's probably possible to convert output from 3D Studio
Max, softimage, or other CAD programs into .obj format.
