Just for kicks I changed the installer extension from .exe to .jar. Lo and behold, to 
my surprise it became a jar file and I was able to manually extract all relevant 
files. Then I copied the 4 jar files and the 2 dlls to the same places that the 
previous version had installed them. I now have the new version working on my 
computer. Considering the triviality of the task involved, the j3d installer that Sun 
provides is a real embarassment!

Anyway, I hope this trick works for you. (I'm sure it will)
