for NT you need the open GL version, as NT can't have directx 7 installed IIRC

Java 3DTM 1.2.1_04 Requirements

     * For Solaris:
           o Sparc system with a frame buffer that supports OpenGL;

           o (e.g. Expert3D, Elite3D, Creator3D, PGX) Solaris 2.6 or later
           o Java 2 SDK 1.2.2 or later. Java 2 SDK 1.3.1 is recommended. This
can be obtained from the Java Software web site, or from the Java Platform
Technologies for Solaris web site.
             Users of the 1.2.2 SDK must download the Java 2 SDK from the Java
Platform Technologies for Solaris page.
           o OpenGL 1.2.1 patch 13 for Solaris or later.
           o SUNWi1of (ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) Optional Fonts) package
     * For Windows (OpenGL version):
           o Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3), Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows
2000, Windows XP
           o Java2 SDK 1.3 or later from Sun Microsystems. This includes the
Java Plug-In (JPI) to update Java(TM) in your browser.
     o OpenGL 1.1 from Microsoft or an accelerator which supports OpenGL 1.1.

     * For Windows (DirectX version):
           o Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, or Windows 2000
           o Java2 SDK 1.3 or later from Sun Microsystems. This includes the

           o Microsoft DirectX 7.0 or later, available from Microsoft.
