Guess I'll keep searching hoping I don't end having to create a new loader. Of course

It depends on what you mean by controlling the animation.

I've been hacking around with the Xj3D loader a bit for a side project,
and there's a fair amount that one can do by exposing the time sensors
and interpolator nodes from a scene and that should let you step through
or selectively trigger most simple animations.

But I seem to have a divergent opinion about what constitutes a behavior
for VRML.
