Folks,

Sorry to bother you with what are some elementary questions, but I need
help and the Sun docs are, unfortunately, vague.

I am trying to install Java3D under Solaris 2.6. I have just downloaded
and installed the reference version and the latest production ver of
the JDK1.2 from the http://java.sun.com/products/index.html site. I have
installed the patches recommended for JDK1.2. (I have also found and
installed OpenGL patch 106022-06 for Java3D; it would have been nice
if there had been a pointer to it from the Java3D web page.)

Questions:

1) Should I install Java3D under the JDK1.2 reference version (final)
or the production ver (beta release)?

The Java3D doc file says to use:

    - JDK 1.2 fcs or later; in particular, it will not work with the
Early Access 4 version of the Solaris JDK Production Release.

I have no idea what that statement means. There is no reference on the
Sun web site to the "Early Access 4" version of the production
release. Is that the latest production release, or is the latest
release OK? Nor to I know what "fcs" means. Could somebody explain
that? My assumption was that the production version was developed
later than the reference version, hence would better match Java3D, but
now I'm really confused. Which version of the JDK1.2 is OK to use?

2) The Java3D doc file says

To install the Java 3D Runtime environment:

        cd $installdir/jdk1.2
        chmod +x $downloaddir/java3d11-solaris-jdk.bin
        $downloaddir/java3d11-solaris-jdk.bin

where $installdir is the directory where JDK1.2 was extracted
and $downloaddir is the directory into which you downloaded the .bin
   file.

IMPORTANT: If you do not "cd" to the jdk1.2 directory before
extracting the J3D Runtime files, then Java 3D programs will not work
   correctly.

It appears that this refers to the JDK1.2 reference implementation,
since only the reference implementation has a "jdk1.2" directory. The
production implementation has a "java1.2" directory, instead, with the
"demo" directory moved out of "java1.2" to the same level. The Java3D
documentation file assumes that the "demo" directory will be a
subdirectory off of "jdk1.2" ("java.1.2"?). This is confusing, because
I assumed that Java3D could be installed with the JDK1.2 production
version, which I thought was a cleaned-up, more fully debugged JDK1.2
reference version, but the instructions don't appear to match. If it
IS possible to install Java3D with the production version, where
exactly do I put it?

Help appreciated!
