The Content Development Working Group (CDWG) of the Web3D Consortium is
revising it's charter. The previous one
(http://www.web3d.org/WorkingGroups/content/) needed work and a number of
events in the VRML community caused it to be a little out of date.
As the co-chair of the CDWG, I am requesting input from any interested
parties to the revised charter. Please respond to me personally (Leonard
Daly <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and/or this news group. Please feel free to
redistribute this entire message to anyone or group that is interested in
3D web-based content.
Thanks for your time,

Content Development Working Group
To support Web 3D content development and
Web 3D content developers
Mission
Engaging Web 3D content is an essential key to the
success of Web 3D. We believe that the widest possible
range of content developers must be encouraged to develop
Web 3D content. Whatever barriers discourage successful
content creation need to be identified and removed if
possible. Factors favoring successful content development
must be strengthened.
Goals:
o Develop and maintain resources for content
developers. This includes the VRML Repository,
VRML FAQ, the VRML Archive Network (VAN), and
other related Web3D resources;
o Provide an interface mechanism for other working groups
to solicit comments for their own needs from content
developers and to encourage content developers to
participate directly in other consortium working groups;
o Determine recommendations for undergraduate and graduate
courses that teach VRML content creation;
o Work with the UMEL WG to provide a easy to use
mechanism of search the VAN and UMEL databases;
o Advocate Web3D content to the Consortium and
others; and
o Support the development of a network of local
web 3D user groups.
Timeline:
o Items that, because of their nature, do not have a
set/estimated date for completion should be reviewed
before each VRML/Web3D conference reguarding their
continued usefulness.
o The education goal is a continuing effort. Sherrie
Thodt will continue and advance her survey of educational
uses and classes for VRML.
Resources:
VAN
FAQ Starting with Bob Crispen's FAQ from his
VRMLWorks site and keeping it current with
content-related problems from the Web3D
mailing lists and newsgroups.

Current Status
The Working Group was approved by the VRB on 19, March 1998, with
the request that the goals be re-evaluated and refined for clarity and
brevity.
23.03.1999:
Prototype VAN completed (http://www.vrml-content.org/)
The group is currently re-evaluating their goals and timelines
because of the significant changes in the Web3D community
in the last 9 months.
