Managing Java3D with swing is a tricky issue with no easy solutions. Try searching for the words HeavyWeight or LightWeight in the mailing list archives. For a start look at the HeavyWeight lightweight article on the swing connection. Remember, Java3D canvas is heavyweighgt and most of the swing components lightweight.
