This message is to update all of you on our plans for the next version
of the Java 3D API. We plan to release the specification for the 1.2
version of the Java 3D API for public review this summer. More
information will be provided at JavaOne (June 15-18). Henry Sowizral,
chief Java 3D architect, will give an overview of Java 3D 1.2 features
in a talk at JavaOne.

During the public review period, we will release an early access
implementation. The focus of the Java 3D 1.2 release will be
performance, stability, and some new features. This release will be a
minor update to the Java 3D API. Within that framework, we will try
to include many of the features that Java 3D programmers have
requested over the past year. Features, such as off-screen rendering,
that have had several requests from many different users and market
segments will be given more weight.

As a reminder, if you have any suggestions for the Java 3D 1.2 API,
please send them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] We won't be able to
respond to them individually, but we will read and evaluate all
feedback.

For clarification, API changes in Java APIs are limited to "dot"
releases, and must undergo a public review process. This means that
the impending 1.1.2 release (and the eventual 1.1.3 release) will not
include any new Java 3D API features. The only things it will include
are bug fixes and a new utility package--no API changes to any existing
classes or packages.
