Sun's Java 3D Technology Licensed by
SGI for IRIX Platform
Provides Developers With Access to SGI IRIX Platform for Development And
Deployment of Java 3D Applications
PALO ALTO, Calif., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:
SUNW - news) today announced that SGI(TM) has licensed Sun's powerful
network-centric Java 3D(TM) Application Programming Interface (API). This
agreement will enable developers working on the SGI IRIX platform to
incorporate 3D graphics capabilities into their applications quickly and
easily. The agreement, a result of developer demand for the 3D capabilities
of the Java(TM) platform, allows developers to create and deploy Java 3D
API-based applications on the IRIX platform and opens the door to a whole
new customer base for Sun's popular Java 3D technology.
Java 3D API Provides Cross Platform Development and Deployment
The Java 3D API, which is already available on the Solaris(TM) operating
environment, Windows '95, Windows '98 and Windows NT platforms and will soon
be available on the Linux platform, will run on SGI's IRIX entry-level
desktop and high-end graphics workstations. SGI's support of the Java 3D API
is a significant step towards continuing to establish Java 3D technology as
a cross-platform, ``graphics for the network'' solution.
The Java 3D API is network-centric, enabling collaboration in 3D across the
network; and its easy-to-use, high-level programming model dramatically
reduces application development time and costs. These features come wrapped
in a portable architecture, enabling applications based on the Java 3D API
to scale gracefully from PCs to high-end workstations.
The agreement between Sun and SGI will expand the Java 3D API's already
strong presence in the software development market; programmers developing
with the Java 3D API will now be able to develop and deploy their
applications on the SGI IRIX platform.
``The fact that SGI is licensing Sun's Java 3D graphics technology speaks to
the strength of the developer community's need for the network-centric Java
environment,'' said Ken Okin, vice president and general manager of
Workstation Products, Sun Microsystems, Inc. ``The higher level programming
model and rich feature set of the Java 3D API will improve application
time-to-market.''
``Collaboration is key to our business,'' said Charlie Catlett, senior
associate director, technology, National Center for Supercomputing
Applications (NCSA). ``We chose the Java 3D API to develop our Astro3D
astronomy visualization tool because it enables researchers around the world
to simultaneously interact with the same model at the same time, and it is
critical to have a high performance tool that is capable of running on
different platforms. Licensing of the Java 3D API by companies like SGI and
groups such as the Linux community's Blackdown Organization makes
collaboration among our researchers and engineers smoother and more
effective.''
The Java 3D API Extends the Java(TM) 2 Platform
The Java 3D API is a standard extension of the Java 2 platform. This
technology allows Java application developers to add 3D capabilities to
their applications, while leveraging the speed, stability, completeness and
interoperability of the core Java platform. The Java platform is being used
by close to a million developers and has been licensed by over two hundred
industry-leading technology companies.
Since the Java 3D API was made available in December 1998, there have been
more than 26,000 downloads. The Java 3D API is available free worldwide at
http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/3D/. For more information on the
