This may have *nothing* to do with your problem but the fact that view
became "frozen" reminds me of the problem I reported where if I try to
capture the Canvas3D display image inside the main thread (instead of
from a separate thread) the view will henceforth be frozen.

Also, on a related note concerning multiple views, I've found (and
reported) a few bugs concerning multiple views with weird things
happening in the second (and presumably the third, fourth, etc.) view
but not the first view.  These problems are separate from those that
are view geometry dependent (like billboard).  A question to the Sun
folks: Can we expect that problems with multiple views will be cleared
up in 1.2?.
