This is not true.

Whether you are using your hardware acceleration depends on whether you
have your card's specific OpenGL library on your system. (Assuming you
are using the OpenGL version of Java3d - you have to have your card's
DirectX6 driver if you are using the DirectX6 version of Java3D.)

If you have a card which only handles full-screen acceleration (a Voodoo
or Voodoo2 - not Banshee which is able to do windowed acceleration),
then you'll only be able to get hardware acceleration when in fullscreen
mode and if you are using the correct drivers.

The opengl32.dll which comes standard for WinNT/Win95-OSR2/Win98
provides software rendering ONLY.

P.S. This is covered in the FAQ
(http://tintoy.ncsa.uiuc.edu/~srp/java3d/faq.html) and in the mailing
list archives. (I haven't got the URL for the archives handy.)
