Cassandra - the non SQL distributed database. Recently twitter spoke about how they switched onto it (from heavily sharded MySQL). Note that it originated at facebook. So we have 2 of the biggest (and probably most important) social network platforms of our times depending on it now, and it is written in java - I guess there is life in the old JVM yet for "systems" programming.
