Just to throw this in to the thread, I remember the multitouch presentations from AGES ago, referred to in the recent podcast. I *believe* Apple bought (in some way or form) the research group that did that presentation.
They paid money to prevent the competitors using this for the next 20 years. I hate that whole concept, but that is how I remember the story brewing about 7 years ago. Sorry for vagueness, at work.
