A few days ago NDP reported that Android outperformed Apple in the
smartphone market, 1st quarter of 2010. Apple spokesperson argues
against the report:

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/05/11/apple_responds_to_android_sales_says_npd_data_doesnt_tell_whole_story.html

basically on five points:

1) It's only USA based
2) the comparison doesn't include iPod or iPad
3) Apple sells only at the specified price tags, while Android
manufacturers often have sales promotions and discounts.
4) the estimate has been done with an insufficient number of samples
(150,000 interviews)
5) Apple only partners with a single carrier, AT&T, in the USA, while
Android manufacturers have multiple partnerships.

Well, this kind of response is so pathetic that I can only infer that
Apple has been hard-bitten by the news:

1) Well, yes, it's only a USA perspective. NDP clearly state it. So,
what?
2) iPad is a Very Different Thing and I think everybody agrees that
Apple is the market leader for that device class. OTOH, I don't see
iPod as relevant (we're talking about smartphones and Jobs hasn't
tried yet to persuade Apple customers that they don't need the radio
inside their mobile; but he could try and be successful, I think).
3) This is the most laughable and it's hard for me to seriously
comment it. It would make sense only if competitors were doing
dumping, which they don't.
4) I believe that the regular politic pools about approval rates of
governments are performed on much smaller samples and they are
considered reliable - please correct me if I'm wrong.
5) Ridiculous as point 3 - clearly Apple competitors are smarter in
this, still Apple pretends that everything is measured with their own
metrics.
