In the past, I was convinced it made sense. After the experience of
the latest years, I think it makes sense per each context, but there
are contexts that are too different for it to be effective. That is:
the classic desktop (Win/Linux/Mac OS X) is a context within which a
context-independent graphic toolkit can work. When you come to the
last generation smartphones, they have such a different paradigm that
probably it's better to keep well separate the views from the model /
controllers, eventually reusing the latter ones and rewriting the
views ad hoc.

This for an optimal, well-integrated solution. But as I said before,
sometimes you need a suboptimal solution with smaller costs and for
sure being able to directly port a Swing based application would be a
good thing. Also, I feel that pad-sized devices (at least the largest
ones such as the iPad) are much closer to a desktop than a smartphone,
and probably lots of things could be shared by a large pad and a
desktop application.
