It's my impression that 'normal people', if they've heard of Java at
all have very low expectations. Slow to load and ugly. So, not only
would they not seek out a "java store", they'd probably actively avoid
it. And, frankly, I can't really blame them.

Just yesterday, I was setting up my new printer (a Lexmark E260dn) and
discovered that it has a built-in web server for configuration.
There's a function there that lets you save the settings made through
the webapp to distribute them to other printers on the network. Nice
idea if you've got more than one printer, which I don't. But, I was
exploring, so I clicked it. and Lo! it's a java applet. So, I got to
stare at that f***ing coffee cup for a half minute while the damn
thing asked me *three times* if I'd authorize it to run on my system
until I finally just gave up and clicked the check box telling my
computer to always authorize any applets coming from that particular
publisher. It still asks me at least once every time I access the
applet. And what's my reward for this inanity?: An GUI that would
probably give Joe a brain hemorrhage.

Don't get me wrong. I like Java and I can appreciate the advantages
the JVM brings. I use it every day and get paid to hack on an (ugly)
swing app and various other bits and pieces. Still, there's lots about
the "java story" that has just never made sense to me.
