My understanding was the claim extending to writing. :)

I never challenged text navigation and editing as something IDEs do
easier.  I challenged that they will make you more productive.  Again,
I see this as the same as saying a word processor will make you a more
productive writer than building a vocabulary and typing skills
yourself.  Will it make it easier to find mistakes?  Certainly, but by
itself I can not claim it is enough to make you more productive.
(Indeed, with most word processors, it simply shifts the mistakes you
would have made.)
