The argument about the least powerful solution made some sense but
seemed somewhat flawed.

Yes, a table of data can be accessed from the web by another
application but an Applet cannot. However the same is true for a flash
application which is similar. I believe the same is more or less true
about a HTML5 Canvas too. It is possible to look at the source code. A
search engine however is highly unlikely to be able to look at
JavaScript drawing on a canvas and guess what it does. Also even an
image is not normally comprehensible by a search engine. It the case
of an image the search engine has to rely on keywords and names etc
supplied by the page author. Isn't similar metadata available for
Applets or Flash (I am pretty sure that both have some form of
alternative text). This puts all Canvas or Image based elements of a
page on a fairly even footing.

I have a feeling someone is going to demonstrate why I am altogether
wrong though momentarily.
