Slightly off track I know, but the importance may depend on company culture and country too. Here in Australia higher qualifications can be seen as a negative - "they are too academic, not practical" - whereas I hear in the US and India higher qualifications are usually seen as a positive.

The content I value from my course is the approaches to problems rather than the languages themselves. I found algorithms and compiler subjects more important than choosing between Java and C. Operating systems theory I still find useful (for performance analysis), whereas operations research and data flow diagrams are near useless -- for my line of work at least!
