Most non-technical people I know get confused by those things continually.

"The bit next to the clock at the bottom-right.  Ok, can you see an
audio icon?  No, right, can you see a less-than sign on a button a bit
to the left of there?  A less-than sign?  Right, it's like a little
left-arrow somewhere near the clock.  Click that.  Can you see the
audio icon now?  Ok, double-click it.  Oh, there's no microphone level
there?  Hmm.  Go to Options -> Properties.  That's in the menu.  The
thing at the top of the audio window.  Then click on Recording and
click on OK.  No, I don't know whether it's line in or microphone,
just try twiddling both."
