the JVM is platform dependent, since the JVM has to work directly over the operating system (and thus over the processor).
so each platform (i.e. Windows over Intel, MacOS over Intel, MacOS over something else, and so on), needs its own JVM. But, the bytecode that is executed over the JVM is largely platform independent (I say largely and not simply "is platform independent" because some platforms have different hardware characteristics, such as, e.g. screen size and so on).
