Dale, I'm not clear which application you're using. If "Outlook Distress" means "Outlook Express", then I can't help because I don't use that. If it means "Outlook 2003", then I can. The first item in the View menu is Arrange By; go into that and you'll find an item called "Show in Groups" near the bottom which is checked. Press Enter to toggle the setting and leave the menus and you should find the grouping has been turned off.
This is a per-folder setting, so you may need to do it in each mail folder. Once you've done it for a particular folder, Outlook will remember it.
