Thanks to Walt, Flor and Steve.

I didn't know about using arrow keys to expand or collapse messages, some 
day I may find that very helpful.

In the end though, unchecking View Messages by Subject did it. I don't have 
any idea how that got checked I never even go into the view menu let well 
alone the sub menus.

I had actually tried unchecking that earlier but Jaws 7.0 seemed to refuse 
to alter the setting though when I went back after your instruction and did 
it then left and returned to the menu selection it was reported unchecked.

I find it disturbing that things seem to mysteriously change in XP Pro. but 
from time-to-time that seems to happen.
