Hi Doug,
Try this:
From the start menu, and then programs, select Windows Messenger.
When messenger opens, go to the tools menu, and then options.
From this dialogue, go to the preferences tab, and uncheck the boxes
formessenger start up, and run in the background.
Tab to the okay button, and spacebar that, and then close messenger.
If you are using Outlook Express, go to tools and then options and the general tab and make sure that windows messenger is not checked to log-in when Outlook Express is open.
You will have to do this in each identity you have.

All of a sudden I have windows messenger in my system tray.  I never use
