I assume you mean Linux (spelt L I N U X), the free and open source
operating system:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux

(If this assumption is wrong, then please ignore the rest of this
email.)

For native Linux programs, you'd use one of the free screen readers for
the *nix console or the GNOME desktop environment, such as Orca.
Consult

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screen_readers

for a list. And you'd normally use native Linux software, such as the
OpenOffice.org office suite, the ELinks and Firefox web browsers, the
GAIM instant messenger, rather than more familiar Windows-only
alternatives.

For examples of accessibility-friendly Linux distributions see:

http://www.ubuntu.com/access/

and

I'd advise spending some time with a LiveCD or perhaps running Linux in
a VMWare virtual machine hosted on Windows before attempting to switch,
if that's what you're considering.

Now you might want to use JAWS to access Windows programs being run on
top of Linux. If you run Windows in a virtual machine, for example with
VMWare Server, you can run JAWS with Windows, no problem. The tricky bit
would be controlling VMWare with your Linux screen reader without the
Windows and Linux screen readers fighting for the sound output.

The other way to run Windows programs on Linux is with WINE, which is an
attempt to provide the Windows API on Linux. It's just conceivable JAWS
might work with WINE but I very much doubt it. If anything might work,
it's NVDA, since that uses the Windows API only and doesn't rely on
video interception.

Sorry if that ended up being a rather rambling and over-technical
response. If you can clarify exactly what your needs are, I might be
able to be of slightly more assistance. If your further questions aren't
particularly JAWS-related, please feel free to contact me off-list.

Hope that was relevant and helps.
