When you have auto preview turned on, you are able to tab to the message content instead of pressing enter to open it. It is mainly for sighted people so they can see the message without opening it. If you have auto preview turned on, then as you arrow down through your messages, it will turn them to, read. To turn it off, do an alt v for view and arrow down to auto preview and press enter if it says checked.
