Since Firefox apparently was the default Internet browser, it was probably a mistake to just uninstall it and expect Internet Explorer to take over like that. I would have Firefox installed - it's only 4 megabytes maximum - and uncheck the Start With Firefox as default option. Until that is done, I reckon your friend will continue to experience problems (such as IE not, or no browser, opening). .
