A good text editor to use for this is EdSharp. It's free and open source and works with rtf. One cool thing is that it uses the microsoft word spell checker if you have Word installed.
The URL is http://www.empowermentzone.com/edsetup.exe. The program is made for regular text editing, but also for writing code if you're a programmer. If you're not,don't be intimidated by the extra features in the menus that don't seem to make much sense. I use the program for medical transcription with no problems at all. Also, because it works with RTF, you can still use David's suggestions quite nicely.
