You can use Auto Sum for totaling a column.
Usually you don't even have to highlight it.
Simply put the emphasis on the cell under your column of numbers.
Use Alt I, f to open the functions menu
Choose SUM
When you go back to this in the future it will go back to the function
you used previously.
The formula will be entered in the combo box.
If necessary you can edit it.  Sometimes Excell doesn't have the correct
formula if you insert a line in the spreadsheet.
Then hit enter and you should have your total.
