No kidding. If computers could talk, I'm sure my trusty going on 6 year old Dell Vostro would be sayng something like.. What happened to your fancy shmancy Windows 10 desktop? What good is that I Core 7 processor with all that ram and space to you now? Look at you, coming back to me in your time of need... Desktop's not doing so hot now is it?

I should have realized that Microsoft Accessibility had no way of trying a system restore via safe mode with all the problems you were experiencing since they didn't have a snow balls chance of logging onto your computer! That is surely 1 hell of a weird coincidence, the Windows update screw-up, & updating Jaws at the same time! Wow! Like I said, glad you finally got it sorted out. Take care. Error messages to check the eventlog, volume shadow copy error, windows center protection disabled and as the Internet wasn't working either, the tech couldn't try to remote into the machine. Alls well that ends well I suppose. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. I reached out to Microsoft Accessibility. After going over everything, they suggested that it was most likely a Windows update that for whatever reason went bad. We tried going into the update section of settings and it kept on closing on me with all sorts of error messages. The FS tech who I spoke to (Dennis I believe was his name) also mentioned this as a possibility. In any event, with my still working Windows 7 laptop, I downloaded a Windows 10 ISO, burned it to a DVD and popped it into the tower with my sighted wife following the prompts to repair keeping my files and programs in tact. This did the trick. It ran, rebooted a few times and is now up and functioning as it should with all sounds and services running. Thought I'd share should anyone ever come across a similar problem. Needless to say, I'm going to keep a Win 10 recovery disk handy from now on. Been using Jaws since V 3.7U and this is the first time I encountered an issue such as disruptive as this during an update. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Friday, February 24, 2017 3:37 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Major computer issue after updating Jaws Both numbers work. However, my sighted wife says that there's an error message having to do with the audio/sound application not being loaded. Following the prompts, though we are given the option to enable audio, this doesn't seem to occur. Nor am I able to connect to the Internet even though this machine is connected via an Ethernet cable. I've checked online and even someone on one of these lists recommended to uninstall audiodrivers in the device manager, and restart, but this doesn't seem as though it wouldn't work for me as again, I'm somehow no longer connected to the Internet. I also tried accessing system restore and am presented with an error message having to do with the audio property profile not being loaded and to check the event log etc. I've since tried rebooting and am again stuck on that original screen before the desktop. I wrote FS earlier, but who knows. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Friday, February 24, 2017 9:39 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Major computer issue after updating Jaws Crist says he started the process form the downloaded installer. From that point of view, he did everything right. Crist, if you and your wife can arrange it, I think you need to call FS together. They need to know that installation of the current JAWS 18 caused this nightmare, and they will be eager to help. I'm guessing you somehow went into diagnostic mode instead of normal startup. I did this once when messing around with the MSConfig file, and I needed sighted expertise to get me out of it. My guess is that FS/VFO can do this for you. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mr. Ed Sent: Friday, February 24, 2017 11:56 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Major computer issue after updating Jaws Hi, How did you update your Jaws? I first ran the update on my personal Win 7 Pro Dell laptop and everything went as usual. Did the reboot and all was good. I'm writing this email on that machine. I waited for the business day to be over before doing the same on my Dell Win 10 pro business desktop. Again, ran the downloaded installer, went through the process and clicked on the ok button when I was prompted to reboot. However, on the desktop, I am not able to get to the actual desktop. Indeed, there is absolutely no sound coming from my machine. The only way I know what's going on is with my sighted wife's help. I get to the screen with three buttons for connect to the Internet, ease of access and the power down button. The connect to the Internet button is crossed out as if it hasn't completed loading. The ease of access button is active, but even if I try to start narrator, there is still no sound. My wife says that it looks like Narrator turns on, but with no sound, there's nothing I can do. That and since the desktop doesn't come up, I still can't get anywhere. The only thing we're able to do is access the power button to either restart or shut down the computer. We've tried restarting and pressing the f12 button when that prompt comes up briefly, but then I get a screen with options of a legacy boot and other diagnostics options that I'm not familiar with. As far as the sound goes, I've made sure and checked with both my USB powered headphones and regular desktop speakers. There aren't even any system sounds. Don't know if even calling FS would be of any help since again, there's no audible feedback what so ever. Can't even try a system restore since I can't get to the desktop where everything's fully loaded. NVDA doesn't come up either. Any ideas? I'm really at a loss.
