So let's all retract our collective claws and get back to the business of helping each other out. FYI, there are members of Freedom Scientific who do monitor this list and have been doing so for quite a number of years already. The three of us who run this thing have no connection with the company, we do this because we feel there is a need for the list and what it stands to achieve. Some of you newer members might not be completely aware that we try to run a tight ship on here. Oh we'll let a little go on but when it is time to move off of a given topic take note and heed the warning. I think you'll find it works rather well once you are here for a while. We've got people who have been on here almost since the start, so we must be doing something right. Now I have to prepare for the hockey game tonight, go Penguins. -----Original Message----- From: Tom Fairhurst Sent: Saturday, June 10, 2017 7:01 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe Mode Sorry that you JAWS users can't run it in safe mode, but Window-Eyes can be run in safe mode. . It's too bad that Freedom Scientific staff don't hav the courage to monitor the list like GW staff used to do for Window-Eyes. Sorry for the rant. Indeed, I like some of the features I am finding in JAWS that are not available with Window-Eyes. I stress the need for JAWS to run in safe mode as I have experienced the need of using safe mode for such processes as removing some antivirus programs and doing registry scans. Additionally, some folders and files can only be removed in safe mode. I realize that these actions must be taken with care, and not everyone feels comfortable with it. However, if you are careful, it can be helpful. -----Original Message----- From: Jorge Rivas Sent: Saturday, June 10, 2017 3:22 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe Mode Hi, Safe mode is wonderful, if you have a helper with vision to read you the menus, if you're using a Dell PC the key is F8 to get to safe mode, other MFG's use a different key. Eric Damery has insisted for years that it is not possible for JAWS to be modified to provide speech in safe mode. My understanding is that Window Eyes provides speech in safe mode only because of a registry hack. Of course, hacking the registry, especially for the technically uninitiated could be very risky. Besides, Window Eyes is no longer being supported, so unless you already have it installed on your computer, you may not be able to download it any longer. There is another open source, free screen reader that shall remain nameless that allegedly provides speech in safe mode, but nobody has ever produced a podcast to demonstrate how this is accomplished.
