As you arrow down through the list of synonyms that you get by pressing the applications key, then y, you land on "Thesaurus..." Here are instructions posted by a person named Dondi for what to do from here. I admit I can't get this to work, but Dondi did, so it must be possible.
This works in Word 2010 and JAWS 13.0.718. Press F6 until you get to research edit and you hear the word that you selected in your document. Tab down once to the start searching button and press space bar. You will hear thesaurus English . Tab down once, you should hear thesaurus English outline expanded. Arrow down through the list of words. When you find one you want press shift+F10 and select insert and press enter.
