There are a myriad of reasons why any particular email message might not arrive at its' intended destination. A transmission error, the mail box might be overloaded or an account is disabled.

Any how that is how the server manages to keep subscriptions active ETC. It is an automatic process, just reply to enable your account and move on. If the server didn't do this on its own we would have to do it manually and for a list this size not even an issue.
