When I had my fax program it is done strictly through e-mail, with the fax being an attachment.

Efax gives me my own fax number and costs me I think $27 a quarter, then I can esily send faxes as email attachments with the email body as fax cover sheet, also receive them as PDF email attachments, which I can then open and scan with Convenient OCR, much more efficient. These services are via subscription, around 9.95, I think, and I had no problems using myfax back in the day.
