Hi Dennis,
Here is one way to get there in Windows 10:
1. From the control Panel, select, File Explorer Options, and press enter.
2. When this dialogue opens, move to the View tab, then tab once to the
tree-view of options.
3. Press the H key until you hear, Hide extensions for known file types, and
use the spacebar to uncheck it.
4. Tab to the apply button, and press the spacebar to apply your changes,
then tab to the okay button, and do the same to close the dialogue.
You are done!
Note:
As I said earlier, this is just one way, I prefer this way, because I am not
impressed with the Windows 10 interface
and it gets the job done

HTH,

Microsoft, in it's infinite wisdom, has chosen to hide extensions for known
file types since at least Windows 98.
Over the past 17 years, I have instructed others to turn this off for the
following reason:
Many people receive files as attachments in their e-mail, and will open them
based solely on what is shown to them , and here is the problem with that:
The name of a file can contain what looks like a file extension, for
example:
statement.txt.exe
Windows recognizes the last .3 as the file extension, so if file extensions
are hidden,in the example above , the user thinks they are opening a text
file when in fact they are launching an executable, which probably contains
a virus or other malware.
So, while it might not seem necessary to advanced users who know how to
obtain this information in other ways, it is a good practice to have these
extensions shown.
I am not trying to start an argument or debate, I am just simply sharing
with those who may be less knowledgeable with computers.
At the end of the day, it is up to each user to understand and maintain
their computer to suit their needs.

You're absolutely right, and I should have mentioned that. I almost did,
smile, but I've had mine set on details since the dawn of time and don't
even think about it. If it's not set to details, control-shift-6 will get it
there.
Even if you have file extensions turned off, you can always use search to
find files of a particular type by typing the file extension you want.

Hi.

I just wanted to add, what you say, Rebecca, about JAWS telling you this
information is true ... if you have your view set to "details". If not, you
will not see this information, and hitting "right" may just get you to
another column of files.

There are a lot of reasons why I think you should always have your computer
show file extensions. But ultimately it's up to you and what you are
comfortable with.

The quick answer to revealing file extensions is to press right arrow on the
file your cursor is on and JAWS will tell you the file type--Word document,
text document, etc. I never, with this information, needed to turn on
hidden file extensions.
But if you still want it, with your documents folder open, press alt-f, then
o. Shift-tab once to get to the list of tabs. Right arrow to View and tab
a couple of times to you get to a tree view of a whole list of items you can
check or not. Turning on hidden extensions for known file types is in this
list. Check it and tab to ok.
For creating a new folder, with Documents open, either press alt-2 on the
top row of numbers along the top of your keyboard, or press alt and tab
twice to new folder.
HTH.

Hi everyone. Can someone tell me how to reveal file extensions in Windows
10? I'm find quite a lot is different when I go into the file menu I
couldn't find where to create and name a new folder, for instance. If
someone could help me out, they'd save me a lot of time and stress digging
around a system I'm still new to (grin).

Thanks a bunch!

Michele
