you have to wait. like a 200 page pdf file can take over 1 minute to process. and jaws will make a tone while you are waiting until it has finished.

That's not working. It still continues to say empty document and no other
window opens.

The particular pdf does contain images and print. Would that make a
difference?

Hi Vicki,

After opening the "empty" pdf, hit JAWSKey+spacebar followed by "od"
(without the quotes).
This invokes the OCR document scan.  It will take a bit of time for the
scan, depending on the size of your document.
The result is then displayed in the virtual viewer.
If you wanted to, once the scan is complete, you could select all of the
text, copy it to the clipboard and paste it into a text file.
