Hi Patti

No. If you set up the keystroke to make PrintScreen the applications key, you
will be able to use either the printscreen key or the applications key on your
laptop and the printscreen key on your wireless keyboard.

Hey Mike,
On my laptop is an application key, but on my wireless keyboard there is not an
application key, but a print screen there.
If I do the change, will it miss up the application key on the laptop?
Patti

Hi

Instead of Modifying the default.jss and default.jsb files for a new script,
you could set up a keystroke to make the PrintScreen key be your applications
key. There is already a script in JAWS 17, 18, 2018 and possibly earlier to
invoke the applications key.

If you do not currently have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder,
create a new file with the full name of default.jkm in your JAWS user folder
and add the following lines:

[Common Keys]
PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

If you already have a default.jkm file in your JAWS user folder just add the
line

PrintScreen=SendApplicationKey

In the [Common Keys]Section of the file.

It is dangerous to have a copy of the default.jsb file in your JAWS user
folder. Any JAWS update can install a new version of default.jsb that can make
your copy of that file useless. And has been pointed out, you can only use
that copy of default.jsb with the version and update that were used to save it.
But using a keystroke instead will be compatible with any version of JAWS.
Also the JKM file can be moved to any version of JAWS.

Thanks for the help. I followed your directions and now seem to not be getting
the funky error messages.

Now, what do I do to get the printpage key to work like the application key? I
know that shift-f10 does that but I want to simulate the application key with a
single keystroke. I still have the script I added to the JFW 18 default
script. How do I get it into the 2018 default script?

Thanks.

you have to do one more thing to actually save the default.jss and default.jsb
files that you deleted.
you have to open the default.jss file and then open the pull down menu and use
save.
when you do the two files you mentioned will be saved in that folder where you
deleted them.
if you don't jaws will use the factory script files from the program
data\freedom scientific\scripts folder instead.

Hi Ralph,

Now that you told what you were doing, I can give you the exact fix.
When you modified the Default script file in JAWS 18 and pressed CTRL+S, Script
Manager saved the modified version in the JAWS user folder. When you imported
settings to JAWS 2018 the file was also saved in the JAWS 2018 user folder, but
since the file is from 18.0 and you didn't used the Use statement, the problem
is that JAWS 2018 is using the Default.jsb file based on JAWS 18.0.
To fix this, with JAWS closed, go to the following folder:
C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\Enu In
this folder, find and delete the files named Default.jss and Default.jsb, then
restart JAWS and the problem should be resolved.

As a suggestion, if your keyboard hasn't the Applications key, you usually
won't need to make any modifications to get back that functionality into
another key. This is because Windows always had a keyboard shortcut for opening
context menus when your keyboard has not Applications key: you can just press
SHIFT+F10 and, except in less standard programs like games in full
SHIFT+screen mode,
you will see the same context menu. Similarly, if you're using a keyboard in
which there's no Windows key, you can quickly open the Start menu by pressing
CTRL+ESCAPE.

Hope it helps!

I tried the "save as shared" and it wouldn't let me.

I think this problem came up because my Jaws 18 default script was modified to
allow the printscreen to act like the application key since my laptop doesn't
have an application key. When I installed Jaws 2018 a couple months ago I had
it import my Jaws 18 settings.

The problem was that when I press the "printscreen" key, I got a message saying
something about an unknown call to script. Since I normally use a wireless
keyboard that has the application key I hadn't gotten around to trying to fix
things until this weekend. I opened the default script in the script manager.
It showed the modification I had made to my Jaws 18 default script. I saved
the 2018 script and exited the script manager. Now I'm getting the message
about the default script not being found.

I'm a script ignoramus so have no idea what to do. I would appreciate some
easy-to-follow instructions about what to do.

Thanks.

Unless you were modifying this file or installing scripts that make
modifications to it, this is rare.
However, if you can bring the file in Script Manager with CTRL+SHIFT+D, try
using the Save As Shared option in the File menu to see if recompiling the file
fixes the issue. This is because JAWS actually doesn't search the default.jss,
but the compiled file in binary format, that is, default.jsb. Note that if you
have UAC enabled, you will need to run Script Manager as administrator to be
able to save into the shared folder.
If you were making modifications, these were saved in the JAWS user folder when
you pressed CTRL+S. If so, go to the JAWS settings folder for your user (use
the Explore My Settings shortcut or go to the path
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\version\Settings\enu), and delete the default.jsb file in this
folder if it exists. If you use JAWS in a language other than English, change
Enu for the three letter abbreviation of your language, for example ESN for
Spanish.

Hope it helps!

Hi,

I am getting a message that my default script is missing. How do I get it
back? From what I can tell, it's still there (at least I can bring it up in
the script manager. Would a Jaws system repair do any good? If so, how do you
do one?

Thanks
