Miriam, I think this will work:
Go to your "documents" folder and press enter. Listen to what JAWS says. It should say the name of a document and "Not selected." If you hear "Selected," press control-spacebar together and, if need be, repeat until you hear "Not selected" along with that file name. Press shift-control-n together. You should hear "Edit" and possibly "New folder." Type the name you want, "Books."
