This method would have worked beautifully if the key stroke had worked. The
problem was that pressing the space bar wouldn't check what I wanted.
Luckily, I could turn off Magic, get to what I wanted to do, and then have a
sighted person check ascending with the mouse, and now everything is fine.
My problem now is that there are a few things that my computer isn't doing
properly and I need to find a sighted computer person to look at the
hardware, I think. Thank you to everyone who has offered help.

Miriam,

Okay, yet another method, one that always works for me without sighted
assistance on my Windows 7 computer.

1. First, make sure nothing is "selected" in the list you want to
alphabetize. If JAWS says the item in focus is selected, press
control-spacebar to unselect it.

2. Press the applications key, between the right-hand Windows and control
keys.

3. Arrow down to "Sort by..." Press enter.

4. On my system, the first item that comes up is "Name." If this isn't
checked, press the spacebar.

Now, if that doesn't solve the problem, repeat steps 1 through 3 again and
press enter on "sort by."

Now arrow down to "Ascending." On my system, either "Ascending" or
"descending" can be checked. I have "ascending" checked and "descending"
unchecked. No need for sighted assistance to confirm.

I hope this one works for you.

That worked, but I couldn't check ascending with the space bar. I had to ask
a sighted person to do it with the mouse. That sighted person is my
daughter, who is rather impatient, so I'm not goint to be able to get her to
do this with all the files in Documents.

Hi Miriam,

Try the following:
1. Press, Alt + V, to open the View menu.
2. Arrow down to the, Sort By, sub-menu, press enter to open. Also, make
sure the, List, checkbox is checked as you're arrowing down.
3. Arrow down, & you want both the, Name & Ascending, checkboxes checked.
It sounds like the, Descending, option might be checked, so pressing enter
on, Ascending, should fix the problem.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

This hasn't worked for me. If I shift tab, I get to a tree few where I can
open or close things. But I can't change the order from a to z in the
documents folder or the sub folders within it.

When you are in the folder
Press SHIFT + TAB to land on the NAME column header then press Enter to put
the files in Alphabetic order if you do this again it will reverse the order
descending to ascending.
Also, once you press SHIFT + TAB you may right arrow to the "Date Modified"
column and sort your files by Date order.

Somehow, when I moved, a lot of the files and folders in documents got
turned upside down with the ones starting with A at the bottom of the list.
Can someone explain in detail, what I need to do to change the order?

Miriam
