There are scripts you can get to make Youtube stuff more accessible. Short of that, what I do is turn off the virtual cursor, then use the K for play/pause; and J and L for rewind and fast-forward respectively.

If you tab through the screen with the virtual cursor off, you can also find the volume setting slider and move it up and down.
