John, This may not assist you directly, but lately when I've encountered this problem, I've found that the JAWS convenient OCR feature reproduces the text with the spaces between words intact. I don't recall if JAWS convenient OCR was included with JAWS 16. If it was, you might try it and compare results. Keystrokes: JAWS key+spacebar, then separately o for OCR , then d for document. The process can be slow. The results will be displayed in a separate window.
