You can also use quick settings (JAWSKey+V), go down to Title Reading and tell 
JAWS to read the column heading automatically when you move into the column.

Earlier versions of Excel allow the user to specify column and row 
titles by the combination insert/alt control R for column titles and C 
for row titles.  The titles can be saved but occasionally wipe out and 
you have to re-do.
