I found a neat free program call "USB disk ejector." It allows you to bypass the "Safe to remove hardware" by actually naming the USB device rather than calling the device "master storage device" or something similar. If you have two devices plugged in windows will often call both devices "master storage device" which means you might eject the wrong device incorrectly. Unfortunately, (at least for me) the program requires the use of the jaws cursor a lot. But I bet (smile) somebody could write a script that would more easily show the list of devices plugged in to the PC. For more information see the link below.
