I recently bought a Dell laptop, and I had a great deal of problems with
JAWS reading things as well. Mostly, I noticed that JAWS could not read
reliably in Excel or even Notepad. I also had a real annoying problem with
the keyboard. It constantly went into Vista's Sticky and Repeat key modes.
This made the computer useless! Freedom Scientific guided me to remove a
Startup process that was interfering with the Video Intercept. This may not
be your problem, but you might want to look for this software. It was
provided by Dell to play DVDs. In my case, it was part of Media Direct, but
it had another name previously.

Press Windows R, to open the Run dialog box. Type "msconfigg" and press
Enter. Press Control Tab, until you hear the Startup tab. Press Tab to
enter the list of Startup programs. Arrow down through and see if you hear
anything to do with CyberLink or PowerDVD. In my case, it was a CyberLink
entry which is located in my "C:/Program Files/Dell/Media Direct" directory.
If you do, press the Spacebar to uncheck the item. Tab to the OK button and
press Space. You will be asked to reboot your computer. If you have this
application, this is your problem and you will be in great shape! It did
for me! I am not sure what this program did, because with it disabled, I
can still watch a DVD in Media Direct. It still screws up my keyboard until
you exit the program.
