Did you also press the spacebar on any of those checkboxes, to try to change the state, rather than just taking your neighbour's workd for it? There should also have been an error on-screen with windows loaded indicating if a sound card driver could not be loaded if that is the problem.
You'll need to have someone sighted more expert look at your computer screen. If you could load into Safe Mode, and follow any prompts, that might help.
