Sometimes when I change how eloquence pronounces a word, it still doesn't sound quite right because the accent is on the wrong sylable. I try things like adding a space between sylables. Sometimes that helps; sometimes it doesn't. I'm using Jaws 10 with Vista, although I've had this same question with earlier versions of Jaws and operating systems.
