Hello Holger,
If I was you I would try the check disk with the /R switch first.
Reformatting might or might not make the drive work right. It really can't
be diagnosed properly by Email. If you are not able to run the check disk
with the /R switch from a command line then you can run it from the recovery
console with some sighted help if you have SP2. I think you said you are
using XP. However, I think you should be able to run the chkdsk /R on your
I volume. Give it a try!
Take care.

Hello Holger,
The error indicates a problem in the master file table. You might try to
run a check disk on the drive. Open a command prompt under accessories.
You might have to switch to the folder where the chkdsk.exe file is
located (usually c:\windows\system32). Type in CHKDSK i: /r (the switch
of /r locates bad sectors and recovers readable information). Also some
drives have two power connection types, one for SATA and one for earlier
types of drives. Some people have problems when using both connections.
If you do the check disk and you have a $MFT write error then you might
want to contact Seagate for a diagnostic utility for the master file
table.
Take care.
